Interview with SD Voyager

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeffrey Kirkeeng.

Jeffrey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have a BA in East Asian history, language and comparative literature from Brown University in Providence RI. My interest in art started in third grade with a fascination for weekly art class at a rural elementary school & grew from there, encouraged further by seven years of formal art training through the end of high school. Since then I have always engaged in the creative process with painting, drawing, sculpture, design, and ceramics.

Has it been a smooth road?
Like every business we have our up and downs. The challenge is getting the word out that we are here as a community resource . We always appreciate it when people support local businesses and artists & craftsmen in the community.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Art Wheel offers a variety of services including a full ceramics studio for those interested in pottery, ceramic art, sculpture, tile and architectural installations. We all offer a space for one-time visits, family gathering or special events in a unique setting. As well as studio space for regular classes.

Our most popular offering is a pottery wheel introduction workshop including instruction & hands on experience. Offering the opportunity for an introduction to understand the complex process of ceramic art or design that surround our everyday lives from the cup & bowls we eat and drink from to the sinks & tubs we wash in to the floors we walk on ceramic are a part of the human experience. We welcome the curious & creative. design commissions in Coronado, Del Mar and San Diego county including outdoor art, garden art, interior design. Art is and has been integral to society and culture for thousands of years as seen in museums, architecture & culture.

We are proud to offer a creative space and services to the greater community just steps from the beach in a creative and beautiful environment, and a unique feature is the wheel class are all outdoors.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The great challenge for us is our unique location. We are steps from the ocean at a terminal point not at a crossroads. Our demographic reach is limited, international border to the south, Pacific Ocean 300 feet west of and the miles of the San Diego bay to the north.
